In this issue long-time user, Brian Cain, Executive Director of Global Research at Schering-Plough, shares how he uses our services to meet the new demands in the health care sector. Brian Cain | Executive Director of Global Market Research | Schering PloughPharmaceutical research has been expanded to include customer, consumer and advertising studies, often conducted on a global scale. Brian Cain talked to us about how Schering-Plough Corporation uses FocusVision Worldwide to meet the new demands of research in the health care sector.


At Schering-Plough the Global Market Research team is faced with responsibility for many different types of research on a worldwide basis. In addition to the more traditional customer research with physicians, the advent of “direct to consumer” marketing has added consumer and even advertising research to the scope of studies Cain’s team conducts.

With a wider variety of research, there are often more people involved or interested in the research who can benefit from seeing interviews first-hand. "Using FocusVision to transmit our interviews live is an effective way for us to bring in an extended team to view the research. It has helped tremendously to have this broader team really listen to what the consumer is saying."

In addition to getting others involved, Cain uses FocusVision to make sure his entire research team can participate in interviews. "FocusVision helps get more of the core research team involved, especially with global research where colleagues around the world might not logistically have the time to travel to focus groups."

Like most research executives, Cain finds that travel associated with qualitative interviews creates challenges in managing resources and creates wear and tear on his researchers. "There are never enough people or money. I need to be very conscious of how we use them both. FocusVision is a great way to do that. Our research team would much rather watch FocusVision than travel all night to Europe or the West coast and come in the next day exhausted from travel.

A career Pharma researcher and as Executive Director of Global Market Research at Schering-Plough, Cain says he "developed his research skill under Dick Fordyce’s leadership at Ortho-McNeil." It was under industry-giant Fordyce that he saw how market research drove the business and helped make strong strategic and tactical decisions."


Despite the changing scope of Pharma research, Cain’s philosophy remains unchanged.  Research should impact the business and set actionable standards so the company can make the best decisions.  What we care about most is that research is used in the decision making and FocusVision helps with that by allowing larger numbers to access the research throughout the company.

With Fordyce, Cain became an early adopter of FocusVision to video transmit live interviews from focus facilities directly back to the client office. "Early evaluation and adoption of Focus Vision is a good example of what I was taught: we should evaluate ideas and concepts, take our bias out of the equation, and observe how these ideas (like evaluating and adopting Focus Vision in the early 90’s) can make research stronger."
