Overview

Moving to online focus groups doesn’t mean giving up on interactive exercises that help you explore the subject matter in different ways. Here’s five flexible tools within FocusVision InterVu that you can use to dig deeper and engage your participants in a digital environment.

1. Mark Up

HOW IT CAN BE USED:

The Mark up feature can be used in a variety of scenarios, most commonly for obtaining feedback on how something looks, such as a rendering of a package design, shelf placement, dining menu, or advert. It can be a very tactical tool to help chose a winning design, identify likes and dislikes, and/or used as the basis for the conversation.

HOW IT CAN BE USED:

Video and audio playback can be used as a standalone piece of stimuli to frame the conversation – for example, to introduce a concept or set a mood. It can also be used in conjunction with the mark up tool to obtain feedback on a concept or to evaluate an advert (this could be either the finished product or when just starting out at the storyboard stage).

3. Drag and Drop

HOW IT CAN BE USED:

Drag and Drop is extremely versatile as it can be images or text, selecting or discarding items, organizing elements, rating and so on. Tactically it can be useful to see the architecture around a portfolio, evaluate brand or advertisingt messages and see where people agree and disagree. It can be powerful to see how people organize things in real time or delve into emotions through images by pulling out dimensions that people can’t immediately articulate.

GOOD TO KNOW:

In drag and drop exercises the participants are asked to rank/order stimuli, which could involve sorting messages, products, brands or more abstract concept and images. The stimuli can be set up using pre-loaded marks, words or stamps in a “bank”, for the participant or moderator to then place on the stimuli material (such as checkmarks, crosses and words).

HOW IT CAN BE USED:

Polling questions are a great way to see where a consensus has (or has not) occurred. For example, it can used at pre-determined stages in the discussion, before moving onto the next topic. Another use is to see if a clear winner has emerged on a concept or advert. It might also be used to see what the top 3 choices are for participants and focus the discussion around those choices.

HOW IT CAN BE USED:

Web Usability Studies are a great way to quickly determine how people are navigating their way through your website – whether they are finding the information they need or completing the action they wanted to take, how quickly (or long) it takes them, whether the journey is intuitive, or the messaging resonates.
